A project developed by students with the support of IIT of ANAS and AzScienceNet was awarded a gold medal in the IX Republican competition ‘Scientists of tomorrow’. The competition was held on 11-13 February in the framework of the International Science and Engineering Fair.

The project ‘Azeri Dactyl Alphabet’, developed by 10th grade students of the Lyceum of Talents at Baku State University, Muhammad Isazade and Kanan Gasimov, won first place in the computer science nomination. The project was supported by AzScienceNet, the Institute of Information Technology of ANAS. There are more than 310,000 people with hearing and speech impairments in Azerbaijan and Azeri Dactyl Alphabet will boost the development of inclusive education in the country.

The project ‘Plant Disease & Cause Detection using Deep Learning’ that was developed by Ruslan Bayramov, 11th grade student of the academic lyceum named after academician Zarifa Aliyeva, was awarded second place. A robot is able to detect disease in plants and its causes, with the help of Deep Learning, and can be used by small and medium-sized entrepreneurs in farming. The project supervisor is Associate Professor of IIT of ANAS Yadigar Imamverdiyev.

Alongside the aforementioned projects, 9th-grade students of Baku European Lyceum, Selay Karimli and Nuray Karimli, presented the ‘Coder Hub’. And the ‘Health and Donate’ project was introduced by the 10th grade students Kamal Alizade and Maharram Akbarov. School children regularly met with researchers at IIT of ANAS, who helped them to enhance their ICT knowledge and skills.

Of 370 projects in ‘Scientists of Tomorrow’, 187 competed in the final round. 11 school children were awarded first place for 6 projects; 29 students took second place with 16 projects; and there were another 46 students with 25 projects. In addition, students were awarded prizes by various US scientific societies during the competition. Four projects (7 students) from among the winners will participate in the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in the USA in May this year, with the financial support of BP (British Petroleum).

The contest was organised by the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Republican Committee of the Free Trade Union of Education Workers, and BP. The main purpose of the competition is to bring the creative potential of pupils in the field of science and technology to the forefront, and at the same time to improve the system of continuous professional training within three contexts: ‘school – university – science’.
