RENAM, the National Research and Education Network of Moldova, continues to extend the eduroam service across the Republic of Moldova. Comrat State University (KDU) offering secure and easily accessible internet across the university’s study areas and student dormitory. This ensures reliable connectivity for both students and staff throughout the campus.

The KDU building was connected to the eduroam service in 2021, with the university dormitory’s connection completed in January 2025. A total of 19 access points were installed in the university building, while 21 were installed in the dormitory. RENAM specialists designed this network to ensure optimal coverage, overseeing both the installation and configuration of the equipment to ensure the network operates effectively.

eduroam is a global, secure Wi-Fi roaming service developed for the international research and education community. It enables students, researchers, and staff from participating institutions to access the internet both on campus and when visiting other participating institutions, simply by opening their laptop, mobile phone, or other devices.

The usage dynamics of the eduroam service at KDU have been notably positive. The number of successful authentications of KDU users (at other institutions in the Republic of Moldova or abroad) has grown significantly, from 4,696 in 2021 to 16,676 in 2023, and further to 56,307 in 2024.

As KDU participates in Erasmus+ projects, its staff frequently visit other project partner countries and over the past five years, the number of students engaging in mobility programmes (especially at universities in Turkey, EU countries, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and more) has risen considerably. Both lecturers and students appreciate the convenience of using the eduroam service abroad, particularly during extended stays.

The advantages of the eduroam service became clear when we connected to RENAM. In November 2021, I travelled with colleagues to Sivas Cumhuriyet University in Turkey as part of the Erasmus+ mobility programme. We were pleased to find that we had internet access through eduroam in the university buildings and dormitory.  KDU uses the Moodle platform for educational purposes, which requires internet access. Our students can connect to secure Wi-Fi from their devices, with each provided an individual login and password for eduroam. We inform students about this opportunity, registering them so they can access the internet for free, connect to our educational platform, participate in mobile surveys, and complete assignments from their devices. Previously, we had several eduroam access points, but the coverage was limited. Now, there are no connectivity issues, as coverage is available in all buildings and on every floor. Students and staff living in the university dormitory can now use eduroam. We are satisfied with our collaboration with RENAM. Whenever we have any questions, our staff contacts a RENAM representative and receives prompt feedback.
