On 5 May 2018, the final stage of the ’12th National Olympiad in Informatics Among University Students’ was held in Azerbaijan. In this most prestigious competition in informatics, 200 students from 25 universities competed in 62 teams. The winners will represent Azerbaijan in the 31st International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) which will be held in Azerbaijan in 2019.
The Olympiad is organised by the Institute of Information Technology (IIT) of ANAS, the Ministry of Transport, Communication and High Technologies, the Ministry of Education and the Heydar Aliyev Foundation. Dedicated to May 17, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, the main goal of the Olympiad is to increase the knowledge and interest of university students in the field of informatics and programming.
The AzScienceNet team supported the network-based competition. Professor Rasim Alguliyev, director of AzScienceNet and IIT, emphasised the role of the research and education networks for educational activities and international collaboration of scientists, teachers and students. Thanks to the EU-funded EaPConnect project and GÉANT, Azerbaijan’s research and education community now can collaborate more closely with European partners.
Elmir Valizada, Deputy Minister of Transport Communication and High Technologies highlighted the increasing interest in computer science and IT related university programs. He mentioned that 10% of the students studying abroad have chosen IT and Computer Science. Besides, admission to IT related bachelor programs increased 50% last year. The winners will be awarded on 17th May, World Telecommunication and Information Society Day.
