A three-day technical workshop on the deployment of eduroam was held from May 13–15, 2025, at the Institute of Information Technology of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan (MSERA). The event was organised within the framework of the EU-funded EaPConnect project, managed by GÉANT.

The workshop was led by Zenon Mousmoulas and Halil Adem from GRNET, Greece’s National Research and Education Network (NREN), and brought together IT and network specialists from AzScienceNet (Azerbaijan’s NREN), along with representatives from the IT departments of ADA University, Nakhchivan State University, Azerbaijan State University of Economics, Azerbaijan Technical University, Karabakh University, and the Presidium of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

In his welcome and concluding remarks, Rasim Alguliyev, Vice-President of ANAS and Director General of the Institute, emphasised the strategic value of eduroam in strengthening Azerbaijan’s research and education infrastructure.

“Currently, 33 institutes and universities in Azerbaijan use eduroam,” he noted. “This training is crucial in expanding the service across the country and fostering integration with the European research and education ecosystem through the EaPConnect project.”

Each morning the workshop featured in-depth technical sessions tailored for network engineers and IT administrators, while afternoon sessions catered for a broader audience, including prospective eduroam users.

Day one focused on the architectural design and deployment planning of eduroam, offering a comprehensive overview of its hierarchical structure and technical prerequisites. The second day covered federation-level administration and institutional management tools, while the final day provided hands-on training sessions where participants applied their learning in real-world scenarios.

Zenon Mousmoulas, one of the workshop instructors, praised the participants’ enthusiasm and technical engagement:

“We were impressed by the high level of interest and commitment from the Azerbaijani teams. Expanding eduroam requires both technical readiness and institutional collaboration, and it’s clear that Azerbaijan is moving strongly in that direction.”
