The Azerbaijan Diplomatic Academy (ADA) in Baku, held an international event, a ‘NATO Information Day’ that focused on the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) programme. The event, jointly organised by Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NATO’s Innovation, Hybrid and Cyber Issues division, aimed to enhance scientific cooperation between NATO and Azerbaijan. Over 40 representatives from the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) and institutions under the Ministry of Science and Education, as well as Azerbaijan’s Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Defense, participated in the event. The goal was to exchange ideas and experiences within the local research community, particularly in areas of cybersecurity and innovation.

Babak Nabiyev, Head of the AzScienceNet Network Operation Centre, gave a presentation on a recent report “Cooperation between NATO and Azerbaijan: Advancing Cybersecurity and Research Initiatives”. He highlighted the history of the collaboration between the institute and NATO, starting with the “Virtual Silk Road” project in 2003, which led to the installation of a satellite at ANAS for high-speed internet access. Nabiyev also provided information about the advanced research workshop “Cybersecurity of Industrial Management Systems,” supported by NATO’s for the SOS Programme. Co-organised by the Institute of Information Technology and the Polish National Centre for Nuclear Research, the workshop focused on addressing key cybersecurity challenges.

In addition to past achievements, Nabiyev also provided insights into the ongoing EU-funded projects such as EU4Digital: Connecting Research and Education Communities (EaPConnect) and the GÉANT Project GN5-1, emphasising their importance for the integration of Azerbaijan’s research and education community with Europe.
